20. ACTION STATIONS IN CALI

Q: What have I learnt in my time in Cali?

A: The last time I was in Los Angeles. I learnt that it is not who you know but who wants to know you that is key to your success in this City. But then Los Angeles is not one city it is like three.

My coach and mentor told me on the phone today. Think of the things you want to get, walk in the door with an opening.

I had a meeting with a powerful studio executive, and every now and then the phone would ring, they excused themselves to look at the phone as they were waiting for a call from another mover and shaker, they looked at the caller ID. They did not know who was calling and let it go to voice mail, on one occasion they said recognised the number but they decided to call the person back later. What did this teach me? Well you could say that if you are not on their list then they are not going to pick up, or as my mentor said:-

"You know that situation is real in LA, it is the reality of LA. It is all about what or who is going to take me closer to the money. If that call is not gonna take the executive to the money then it is going to voice mail. So you have to have a strategy. You got to get referrals, you got to move forward in terms of marketing and promoting yourself. Stuff that will make people take notice of you. Great PR, hype builders, what is your creative signature? Your Brand? Your movies are hard hitting, gritty but you dress colourful, elegant, that is what a remember when I met you. Now I remember you because of the colours you wear, you take all the filmmakers that I have met, I don't remember them, but you stuck in my mind. Everyone in this town is touting who they know, make a list send out emails let them know what you are doing, you got to prioritise, get to a mass market. You got to do one thing everyday that puts you out there. A good lawyer can help you get an agent. But then when you have an agent that doesn't mean you stop putting yourself out there. You have to have the tools ready,"

On a lighter note, enjoyed shopping down Melrose, the shops were empty and the pretty shop assistants were standing on the street, getting the trade in. One assistant whom I bought a shirt and wallet from said "Your a nice guy. Don't be a Melrose Player."

She should never have said that to me I like the thought of being a Melrose player :-)

19. FEVER

This is the second week I have been in Los Angeles. I am here meeting people in relation to my new film project "FEVER", it features Joseph Marcell from the Fresh Prince Of Bel Air.

It is an interesting time to be in Hollywood, the economic conditions mean that the distributors are even more talent driven, and cast is key. One distributor said to me it is all about cast, cast, cast! If you give Walmart 50 dvd's the buyer is not going to watch them, but if he see three of four faces on the cover of the DVD that he recognises he is more likely to buy it. The same applies for the audience.

I listened to Ben Ramsey being interviewed on blogtalkradio by Tanya Kersey I also went to his myspace blog and he had some great things to say, check it out. HOLLYWOOD BULLSHIT 101 - BREAKING INTO THE GAME http://tinyurl.com/adm7ss

I have also been catching up with friends in the business.
